Exploring the Geometry of Piles of Salt

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Presentation Site
Participants will pour salt on varies shapes and make conjectures regarding the ridge-lines of the piles of salt. Then the conjectures will be verified or rejected based on geometric properties. Using technology, participants will be shown how to construct models of the salt piles using dynamic 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional geometry software.

Speakers

Troy Jones

Math Teacher, Westlake High School/Math for America
I have presented on this topic at the Park City Mathematics Institute, the University of Utah Math Teacher's Circle, and the Utah Council of Teachers of Mathematics Fall Conference. I have done other presentations using dynamic geometry software at several National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meetings and Regional Conferences, Teacher's Teaching with Technology (T^3) Conferences, as well as the IberoCabri Conference in Lima, Peru.
