i-Ready Math Diagnostic & Instruction: State-approved for 6-8 Math
The Utah State Legislature has provided $8.5 million for the STEM Action Center to purchase supplemental math soft-ware for Utah classrooms. i-Ready was again recommended as a support program for your students. Come learn how your school can apply to use i-Ready Math with any student in grade 6, 7 or 8. i-Ready starts with a stand-alone Common Core assessment which drills down to the sub-skill level and provides individualized instructional recommendations and online lessons. With new, independent research showing i-Ready can successfully predict performance on the new Common Core-based assessments, there is no program more powerful than i-Ready!

You Can be the Teacher AND the Class Clown!
There is such a thing as having a well-managed class, which can progress academically, AND be fun! Learn how to “juggle” these important aspects of a successful classroom with ideas, tips, and stories from former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus clown turned educator, Valerie Hall (aka Daisy the Clown).
By incorporating several classroom management programs including CHAMPS, classroom cheers, raps, songs, unique motivators, and humor, Valerie Hall has made her classrooms blossom into a welcoming environment that students love to go to.
With Valerie’s techniques, she has been able to increase academic scores, while decreasing referrals at Title One schools, see a growth rate of 80% in parent participation at those same Title One schools, and decrease negative behaviors in her current ABS (Academic Behavior Support) Classroom by 60% since the beginning of the school year through January.
Be prepared to participate in this fun professional development opportunity, by learning and shouting cheers, dancing, singing, and maybe even by donning a clown nose.

NASA Smart Skies: DRT Math in Air Traffic Control
Presentation Site
Imagine 40,000 commercial flights per day soaring across United States airspace. Now that’s a pretty hefty real-world distance-rate-time problem! In this session you will learn how to use the context of air traffic control to transform your students’ ability to make sense of and solve distance-rate-time problems using basic middle school math. We will first use an engaging online simulator to model spacing conflicts between two to five airplanes. Then we will use sample material from the paper-and-pencil workbooks to learn how to apply proportional reasoning to solve each problem with strategic route and speed changes. By the end of the session, you will be able to help students mentally detect, analyze, and resolve air traffic conflicts and then communicate a solution that meets both time and spacing requirements. Products featured in this workshop will include the online air traffic control simulator, print-based workbooks, and supporting videos and animations. Participants will also be introduced to Sector 33, a learning enrichment mobile app that challenges students to apply what they have learned in a more game-like setting using their personal smartphone or tablet. All materials demonstrated in this session are free and readily available on the NASA Smart Skies website.
