a Picture Is Worth 1,000 Words, Simulation Is Worth 1,000,000
Online mathematics and science simulations can help bridge the knowing-doing gap that occurs when districts implement the common core and NGSS. These simulations are based on research-proven instructional strategies that help students of all levels develop conceptual understanding in mathematics and science. In classrooms that resemble mathematics and science laboratories, students manipulate key variables, generate and test hypothesis, and engage in extensive “what-if” experimentation. As a result, they become able to think and reason at the top tears of Blooms Taxonomy. Even students who struggle with abstract concepts are able to “see” a concrete representation and make the transition from concrete to abstract thinking and reasoning successfully. Teachers can supplement and enhance instruction with powerful interactive visualizations of concepts.

NASA Smart Skies: DRT Math in Air Traffic Control
Presentation Site
Imagine 40,000 commercial flights per day soaring across United States airspace. Now that’s a pretty hefty real-world distance-rate-time problem! In this session you will learn how to use the context of air traffic control to transform your students’ ability to make sense of and solve distance-rate-time problems using basic middle school math. We will first use an engaging online simulator to model spacing conflicts between two to five airplanes. Then we will use sample material from the paper-and-pencil workbooks to learn how to apply proportional reasoning to solve each problem with strategic route and speed changes. By the end of the session, you will be able to help students mentally detect, analyze, and resolve air traffic conflicts and then communicate a solution that meets both time and spacing requirements. Products featured in this workshop will include the online air traffic control simulator, print-based workbooks, and supporting videos and animations. Participants will also be introduced to Sector 33, a learning enrichment mobile app that challenges students to apply what they have learned in a more game-like setting using their personal smartphone or tablet. All materials demonstrated in this session are free and readily available on the NASA Smart Skies website.

This presentation addresses a familiar challenge – how to teach to a diverse group of students with varied math abilities while preparing for 21st century learning. I will demonstrate an online math program that, backed by research, uses unprecedented technology and AI to accurately assess each student’s math level and then deliver personalized instruction on what a student is ready to learn. Special focus will be placed on the program’s innovative features and learning tools, and how they can be used effectively to support a teacher’s instruction toward meeting classroom goals. In sharing my extensive experience in helping teachers implement this program for all student groups, teachers will learn strategies on how to achieve math success with their students in various contexts, from RtI to Gifted.

Get Inspired with ActivInspire
Limited Capacity seats available

Presentation Site
In this 2 hour workshop, Christine Ferrin and Ryan Wells will introduce participants to several tricks of the trade in ActivInspire to make your Promethean ActivBoard more interactive and student-oriented. We will use object hiding, labeling, actions, layering, and more in creating interactive flipcharts for your classroom.

In addition to creating your own flipchart pages, participants will leave with example pages and instructions. You will get the most out of the workshop if you bring some content or lesson plan material. Bring your laptop with the latest version of ActivInspire installed. This workshop is for teachers who are already familiar with ActivInspire and want to learn more.

Clickers: BYOD with ClickerSchool
Presentation Site
ClickerSchool is online formative assessment at its best with games and polls using clickers, smartphones, laptops, or tablets. In this presentation we’ll provide an overview on how you can gain immediate insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses by bringing your own device (BYOD). We’ll begin by introducing you to ClickerSchool, covering the features and process of acquiring an account. After a brief introduction we’ll proceed into a series of interactive activities, inviting session participants to use their smartphones, tablets, or laptops to engage in a small selection of our subject library. ClickerSchool blends BYOD and hardware clickers seamlessly and Eduware will be providing hardware clickers for participants without devices. Participants will have opportunities to ask questions throughout and will have a chance to provide feedback at the end of the session.
