Choosing Apps for Optimal Learning
Presentation Site
Increased use of touch screen devices (e.g., iPads) in educational technology has resulted in hundreds of available apps for the classroom. However, apps tagged as 'educational' in the marketplace are not created equally; some apps fail to make use of interactions or feedback conducive to learning. This seminar will provide attendees with methods for evaluating educational apps to support constructive learning in the classroom, focusing on finding interactions that promote deep cognitive processes. Feel free to bring your own device(s) and explore app demos along with us.

Is ADDIE My Granddaughter or an Instructional Design Solution?
Presentation Site
Some of you won’t remember the old days. Back then many teachers, who had been teaching for a time, had their curricula in their heads, the worksheets for the year run off and organized in folders in their file cabinets and life was good. They walked in their classrooms in the morning, told the kids to open their books to page 125 and do the worksheet they pulled from their very organized file cabinets.

Well, the old days are over. We even have a relatively new field of specialization in Education called Instructional Design. So, let’s think about that for a minute. At the core of all instruction is design. Designing relevant instruction is key to successful training and/or educational outcomes. While “lesson planning” may be in the DNA of most teachers, do they really understand Instructional Design? Are all teachers Instructional Designers? Are all Instructional Designers teachers? What exactly is the process? And who is ADDIE anyway?

This session will look at the steps of effective and efficient instructional design. The steps of the process will be introduced with specific details that will assist with the design of instruction. And, you will find out who ADDIE is.

Using Digital Resources to Boost Literacy Skills and Engage Readers

Digital eBooks and educational databases are changing the landscape in and outside the classroom. Kids no longer want to read flat pages in a book or on a computer, but kids get excited when they can use technology to queue-up their favorite genre in fiction and non-fiction. Learn how to customize instruction to the medium you are using, whether it is for individual learning, large group and even at home while supporting common core standards.

Learning Outcomes:
Capstone Interactive eBooks are built on the same principles that make print libraries successful - content that spans the curriculum and covers the spectrum of reader interest and ability. All while being accessible through each schools existing digital cataloging system. This session will show educators how to link digital products into their instructional practices while aligning the information to Common Core. Using eBooks or databases will encourage the instruction of perspectives, text analysis, instruction & practice and reading across the curriculum. We will talk about the benefits of digital accessibility and show methods used by educators to incorporate our products into the classroom including lesson plans and activities. Let’s discover how Digital products with mobile accessibility from school and home, encourages reading and research for beginning, at level, and striving readers. Each attendee will receive a 60 day trial for Capstone’s Interactive eBooks and PebbleGo research and reading databases.
